Janet Thomas

ABOUT THE POET

Janet Thomas grew up in Australia within a family besotted with words. She is grateful that her father and his friends filled her ears with their poems, because it helps her understand that reading, writing and listening to poetry is natural and pleasurable.
She likes to think this understanding has helped inform her practice as a teacher and a writer. When she moved to Fairfield in 1987 to further her teaching career at MSAE, she delighted in the opportunity to share her love of language with so many talented students within the school, and later, within the community at large. The vibrant silence of the atmosphere also helped her write a few poems of her own.
After twenty years in Fairfield, she is currently spending time on the exquisite Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia. She continues to write, while teaching workshops in schools throughout the region and pursuing post-graduate research in creativity and talent development. She recently completed certification to teach Nia dance, which she finds to be a wonderful support to poetry.
Her poems have previously been published in Lyrical Iowa, 2005, 2007 the anthology Leaves by Day, Flowers by Night, 1st World Publishing 2006 and she was the 2006 recipient of the Helen Vaughn Memorial Haiku Award, established by Women in the Arts, Decatur, Illinois. She has also been published in Talent Ed, University of New England, Armidale 2009.
