George Kenneth Attwood

ABOUT THE POET

George Kenneth Attwood (1922-2002) was raised in Oakland, CA and was drawn to the ministry in college. He attended the University of California at Berkeley where he was active in the Lutheran Students’ Association. It was there that he met his future wife, Madge, and became inspired to get a Masters of Divinity at Wittenburg University in Springfield, Ohio after his wedding.
His first church was in Redding, CA where his son Christopher Adrian Attwood was born in 1952. After six months, George was reassigned as assistant pastor at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in San Francisco and three years later became head pastor at Beverly Hills Lutheran Church in Los Angeles. In 1968, George retired from the ministry to follow his passion for teaching and working with young people as a high school biology teacher in Watts during some of the violent riots that occurred in that area in the late sixties and early seventies. During his tenure at Fremont High School, George obtained a Masters in Instructional Design from the University of Southern California and also learned Transcendental Meditation.
After his parents passed away in 1984, he moved to Fairfield, IA to be closer to his son, Chris. There he took a position at Maharishi University of Management (Maharishi Int’l University at that time) selecting instructional software for the various departments. A lifelong learner, George completed his third Masters Degree in Creative Writing at MUM. George was loved by all who knew him. He had a childlike curiosity about everything, a wonderful sense of humor and a deep appreciation of the spiritual aspects of life.
