Carol Olicker
ABOUT THE POET
Carol Olicker originally from New York City, has master’s degrees in English literature (SUNY at Buffalo, NY) and social work (Univ of Iowa). From her teens, she had been active in the movements for peace, civil rights, and later, women’s liberation. In grad school at Buffalo, she taught courses in Women’s Studies and helped found the Women’s College there. She continued teaching Women’s Studies when she moved to San Francisco and founded a women’s teaching collective there. In 1971, she learned Transcendental Meditation which instantly opened her heart. Two years later she became a TM teacher and then taught TM in San Francisco, while also substitute teaching in the San Francisco Unified School District. Since 1981 she has lived in Fairfield, Iowa and for the last 6 years worked as a hospice social worker in a neighboring town. Carol is in love with every cat she has ever seen. She has 5 full-time cats and one regular night visitor. She has no human children. “When Ninja Sits” was a result of the poetry writing class Carol took with teacher par excellence, Diane Frank.
